Roxanne Johnson, has been in the fitness industry for about 12 years. Prior to this, she taught Special Education for 10 years. It was while Roxanne was teaching Special Education that she started to experience chronic back pain. At the age of 35 she was told by her chiropractor that if she did not make some serious changes in her life, she could end up in a wheel chair by age 40. This certainly got her attention. Roxanne's chiropractor recommended that she enroll in ballet classes for stretching and core strength and join a gym for resistance training. Within a few weeks she was taking Ballet 2 days a week and working out at the gym 2-3 days a week. Roxanne also added cycling to her routine. After a few months she began to notice a decrease in back pain. After about a year, it was even better and in 2 years she was having more good days than bad. As she says. "There was also a dual benefit...I looked much better in my clothes than before and it was nice when others began to notice".
During Roxanne's second year of working out, she began to look like a light weight body builder. Many were asking if she was a trainer and if she would consider training them. The fitness manager at the gym began to notice and asked Roxanne if she would consider a career in fitness. She had never thought of it, but thought she would give it a try. Roxanne had more clients than she could train in a day, even before she received her official certification. It has been and continues to be a rewarding experience training and helping others reach their personal fitness goals and Roxanne does help her clients get the results they want.
Roxanne is currently certified with the International Sports and Sciences Association as a Personal Trainer and Water Fitness Instructor and with the National Exercise & Sports Trainer Association as a Group Exercise Instructor. Yoga is also a passion of her's in which she is certified through Yogafit. Besides Personal Training, Roxanne teaches stability ball, step aerobics, hi-lo impact, weights, yoga(beginning to advanced), and all types and levels of water classes at various gyms, health clubs, resorts, and private, in home, training.
Most ask how she has the time to fit exercise into her artistic and musical lifestyle. Roxanne says, "Exercise is not a choice, but a way of life. Not only does it make me feel better, but it is what gives me the energy to get my other things accomplished. It also builds the lung capacity for singing. My anatomy teacher always said, "What we don't use, we loose". I believe this and I want to hang on to everything I have as long as I can. The quality of life is far superior with exercise. As I grow older, I want to continue to enjoy life and have the energy to do the things I enjoy. We are only as old as we feel".
